Agra: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday ordered the Uttar Pradesh special task force (STF) to probe the alleged irregularities in BAMS (bachelor of ayurvedic medicine and surgery) exams conducted at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Agra.
The order comes a day after state higher education minister Yogendra Upadhyay held a meeting with the university administration and senior police officials on Sunday. Upadhyay had expressed his discontent over malpractices in the examination process.
The matter regarding exchange of BAMS answer sheet came to light on August 26, when acting vice chancellor of Agra University Vinay Pathak received a complaint. Following a police complaint, a local tempo driver, Devendra Kumar, who was tasked by the varsity to transport the answer sheets from the nodal examination centres and deposit them at the Chhalesar campus, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the matter. Later, a Firozabad based doctor, Atul Yadav, was arrested from Delhi.
According to police sources, the two accused were working hand in glove with a gang that facilitated cheating by replacing answer sheets of students with those written by experts. Preliminary investigation revealed that the gang is operated in Agra by a student leader with the assistance from four other unidentified persons. The gang used to charge Rs 50,000 from students to replace their exam copies with those solved by experts with the help of the tempo driver.
Commenting on the matter, a senior teacher, who requested anonymity, said, “The gang could not have operated without internal support from the varsity. The role of university staff that handles answer sheets needs to be investigated.”
